Launch of the new DP coated hob series for dry machining
July 08, 2008
Mitsubishi Materials Corporation has recently developed and manufactured the new DP coated hob series for dry machining. The DP coated hobs will start to be sold by Mitsubishi Materials Tools Corporation (President: Osamu Takata, Headquarters: 1-6-1 Yokoami, Sumida-ku, Tokyo).

The DP coated hob is a high-speed steel hob
(1) specially designed for dry machining
(2) of gears. With the use of the newly-developed coating, it offers higher efficiency and longer tool life when high-speed dry machining.
Key features of the DP coated hob
- 1.
- Utilisation of the newly developed DP coating achieves the film hardness of 3300HV and oxidation temperature 1250ºC, meaning an increase in heat and wear resistance in comparison with (Al,Ti)N coating(3).
- 2.
- A special design for dry machining and the smooth surface treatment maximise the properties of the newly developed coating, enabling longer tool life when high speed machining (cutting speed over 200m/min)
< Word explanation >
(1)Dry machining:
- A machining operation that is carried out with air blow without using any coolant.
(2)High-speed steel hob:
- A hob cutter made of high-speed steel.
(3)(Al,Ti)N coating:
- Conventional coating with film hardness of 2,800HV and oxidation temperature 840ºC.
