Mitsubishi Materials awarded the 2008 JCTMA Awards
Nobember 17, 2008
Mitsubishi Materials Corporation was awarded the 2008 JCTMA awards (Japan Cemented Carbide Tool Manufacturers’ Association) for its technical exploits.
MITSUBISHI MATERIALS CORPORATION
Development of the MINI-MWS drills with through coolant holes
1.Technical features
- Micro drilling is generally carried out using peck feed with non through coolant hole drills, the result of which leads to an increase in the time for drilling. To solve this problem, Mitsubishi Materials has developed the technology to provide through coolant hole micro carbide blanks and successfully commercialized the world’s first ø0.5mm through coolant solid carbide drills.
2.Novelty / Originality
- Development of the world’s smallest ø0.5mm through coolant solid carbide drills that have ø0.06-0.07mm spiral through coolant holes. This established the manufacturing technology of carbide blanks with precision, high helix micro through coolant holes. Additionally, using the original grinding technology, the special flute geometry that enables non-peck drilling of deep holes has been realised.
3.Contribution / Benefits for the Association
- The achievement of non-peck drilling using carbide materials technology leads to the reduction of machining costs for customers. Drilling time per hole can be reduced by 97% in comparison with a conventional solid carbide drill with no through coolant holes.
