Launch of the MINI-MWS solid carbide drills with through coolant holes
June 06, 2008
Mitsubishi Materials Corporation has recently developed and manufactured the new MINI-MWS solid carbide drills for its WSTAR drill series. The MINI-MWS drills will start to be sold by Mitsubishi Materials Tools Corporation (President: Osamu Takata, Headquarters: 1-6-1 Yokoami, Sumida-ku, Tokyo).

As a range of small diameter drills that complements the existing WSTAR series, LG and XB type drills in diameters from ø1 up to ø3 were introduced in February 2006, followed by the addition of the drills ø0.5 up to ø1 in January 2007. The series now includes the SB stub type for pilot drilling and X20DB, X25DB and X30DB types for deep hole drilling. The MINI-MWS drill has through coolant holes that ensure coolant reaches the cutting edges, leading to good chip disposal and high efficiency non-peck drilling. By using the X-DB type with the SB stub drill, it is possible to reduce the time to drill deep micro holes (maximum allowable drilling depth: 30 x drill diameter).
Key features of the MINI-MWS
- 1.
- All types of drills from stub type to deep hole type have through coolant holes to ensure that coolant reaches the cutting edges. Long tool life can be achieved even when machining stainless steel.
- 2.
- The specially designed cutting edge breaks the chips into fine pieces. Additionally, a smoother flute surface gives good chip disposal, making it possible to carry out non-peck drilling of deep holes with stability.
- 3.
- Sable drilling is realised after using the SB drill for pilot holes.
