Addition of breaker inserts to the coated CBN series

February 01, 2008

Mitsubishi Materials Corporation has recently developed and manufactured an additional range of breaker inserts for the coated CBN grade MBC020. This new range of inserts will start to be sold by Mitsubishi Materials Tools Corporation (President: Osamu Takata, Headquarters: 1-6-1 Yokoami, Sumida-ku, Tokyo).
CBN series   Sintered CBN tools (1) have the highest known hardness value, second only to diamond. Additionally, CBN has a low affinity to iron and is highly resistant to heat. These properties make sintered CBN tools suitable for cutting hardened steels (2) and for operations that can replace grinding.
For the manufacturing of automotive and machine parts, replacement of grinding processes with machining processes has been promoted with a view to increasing machining productivity.
However, the chips produced during machining wrap around the workpiece and tool and this causes machine stoppage and deterioration of workpiece accuracy.
The new range of the series will allow for excellent chip disposal during continuous machining, offering higher machining productivity.

Key features of the breaker insert series

1.
Use of the coated CBN grade MBC020 suitable for continuous to medium interrupted machining.
2.
Optimisation of the chip breaker geometry and position for the breaker insert series improves chip disposability when finishing and increases machining productivity.
3.
Both turning and boring inserts are available, making it suitable for a wider range of applications.

< Word explanation >
(1)Sintered CBN tool:
  • Sintered CBN is produced by mixing the main components, CBN particles (cubic boron nitride) with a binder. It is then sintered at a high temperature under ultra-high pressure. The term sintered CBN tool, refers to cutting tools whose edge is made of sintered CBN.
(2)Hardened steel:
  • Hardened steel is steel that has undergone a heat treatment process of some form. The hardness can be around HRC48 – HRC62. Typical heat treatment processes can include quench hardening, and carburizing.
