New Coated CBN Grade, MBC020

July 20, 2006

Mitsubishi Materials Corporation has recently developed and manufactured a new coated CBN grade, MBC020 . This new grade will start to be sold by Mitsubishi Materials Tools Corporation (President: Osamu Takata, Headquarters: 1-6-1 Yokoami, Sumida-ku, Tokyo).

MBC020    Sintered CBN tools(1) have the highest known hardness value, second only to diamond. Additionally, CBN has a low affinity to iron and is highly resistant to heat. These properties make sintered CBN tools suitable for cutting hardened steels and for operations that can replace grinding. The replacement of the grinding process has meant that sintered CBN tools require a longer tool life during high speed cutting and a further need for improved facture resistance to withstand interrupted cutting. By applying a special ceramic coating to a dedicated CBN substrate, the new MBC020 grade achieves a higher level of the two contradictory properties; wear resistance and fracture toughness. Furthermore, expansion of the types of cutting edge honing(2), which is another essential factor affecting the performance of CBN tools, allows for a broader range of high performance cutting applications.

Key features of MBC020

1.
MBC020 is the first recommended grade for hardened steel cutting.
2.
A dedicated ceramic coating based on MIRACLE coating technology is utilised to improve wear resistance.
3.
broader range of cutting edge honing types are available to optimize the cutting edge geometries that are suitable for different cutting conditions and workpiece geometries.
4.
Double sided, multi-corner types(3), both sides of the insert are usable to allow a cost reduction per insert.

< Word explanation >
(1)Sintered CBN tools:
  • Sintered CBN is produced by mixing the main components, CBN particles (cubic boron nitride) with a binder. It is then sintered at a high temperature under ultra-high pressure. The term sintered CBN tool, refers to cutting tools whose edge is made of sintered CBN.
(2)Cutting edge honing:
  • A coating treatment is applied to increase the toughness of the cutting edges, this is because sintered CBN is a relatively fragile material. By varying this treatment, the cutting properties can change significantly.
(3)Double sided, multi-corner types:
  • Double sided, multi-corner types refer to inserts whose corners on both the front and back faces are cutting edges. Rhombic and square shaped inserts can use 4 corners as cutting edges and triangular shaped inserts can utilize 6 edges.
