UC5115 grade for Cast Iron Turning. New Inserts with a Chip Breaker for Steel Turning

April 03, 2006

Mitsubishi Materials Corporation has recently manufactured new inserts with a chip breaker suitable for steel turning in CVD coated grade UC5115 usually used for turning cast iron. A total of 82 of these new inserts will start to be sold by Mitsubishi Materials Tools Corporation (President: Osamu Takata, Headquarters: 1-6-1 Yokoami, Sumida-ku, Tokyo).

UC5115    A high strength coating layer has been developed by using micro-structure control coating technology. Additionally, All Black Super Even Coating technology(1) is used to give an extremely smooth top coating layer. UC5115 achieves long tool life when turning cast iron and already enjoys a high reputation in the market. UC5115 was therefore also expected to deliver a superior performance even for high-speed steel turning. This is because the results show that adding chip breakers for high-speed steel turning to the UC5115 grade allowed stable, high-efficiency machining of various components.
With the successful testing as a background, inserts for steel turning have been newly added to the UC5115 range.

Key features of UC5115 for steel turning.

1.
MH breaker
A flat land gives high cutting edge strength and good chip control in a wide range of application areas. A general-purpose breaker for high-speed continuous machining of carbon and alloy steels.
2.
MV breaker
A chip breaker suitable for copying and back turning. The positive land gives a sharp cutting action and good chip control over a wide application area. Overall it is a general-purpose breaker for high-speed continuous machining of carbon steel and alloy steels.
3.
SH breaker
A positive land gives a sharp cutting action. Good chip control in the light cutting application area. A chip breaker suitable for light cutting of carbon and alloy steels.
4.
Coating
The UC5115 grade has a coating consisting mainly of nanofiber titanium carbo nitride(2) with unmatched wear and fracture resistance and fine-grained, exceptionally wear-resistant alumina(3) with high heat strength and superior performance for high-speed machining. In addition, the use of the All Black Super Even Coating Technology prevents abnormal damage that conventional inserts suffer from during the turning of cast iron and steel turning.

< Word explanation >
(1)All Black Super-Even Coating technology:
  • A hybrid surface treatment technology, developed using a combination of Mitsubishi Materials’ unique, chemical Even Coating technology and a special mechanical surface treatment. An extremely smooth coating surface can be obtained by using this technology. “All Black Super Even Coating Technology” is Mitsubishi Materials’ name for this technology.
(2)Nanofiber titanium carbo nitride:
  • Titanium carbo nitride (TiCN) is a coating material with a higher hardness than titanium nitride (TiN), and it exhibits superior abrasive wear resistance. Nanofiber titanium carbo nitride is a fibrous titanium carbo nitride, coated using Mitsubishi Materials’ micro-structure control technology, and has an excellent balance of wear and fracture resistance.
(3)Fine-grained, exceptionally wear-resistant alumina:
  • Alumina (Al2O3) with high thermal stability is an effective material for improving wear resistance where temperatures are likely to increase, such as at the rake face that is in contact with the workpiece. This fine-grained, exceptionally wear-resistant alumina also achieves a high coating strength by refining the grain size of the alumina when using Mitsubishi Materials’ micro-structure control coating technology.
