Product Requirement and Background.
Conventionally, CBN has only been used for finishing tools to achieve high-speed, high-
efficiency production, but to further improve production speed and efficiency, CBN tools
now also require the ability to rough machine. However, conventional CBN tools are usually
a brazed construction and the size of the CBN part brazed on the tool limits the achievable
depth of cut. As a result CBN tools could not usually be used for roughing. To solve
this situation the new solid CBN
(1) inserts, MBS140, are made entirely of sintered CBN,
and therefore do not limit the depth of cut. This allows for high speed and efficient
roughing of cast irons with a 2mm-3mm depth of cut. Mitsubishi Materials Corporation
believes MBS140 can help enhance cast iron machining and improve productivity.
Key features of MBS140 are as follows.
