Introduction of a New CVD Coated Grade US905 for Turning Heat-Resistant Alloys and Expansion of M-Class MJ Chip Breaker Series

May 02, 2005

Mitsubishi Materials Tools Corporation (President: Osamu Takata, Headquarters: 1-6-1 Yokoami, Sumida-ku, Tokyo) will add a new CVD coated grade US905 for turning heat-resistant alloys to its insert series specially designed for difficult-to-cut materials. Additionally, the M-class, MJ chip breaker series for difficult-to-cut materials will be expanded to offer new 44 items.
MJ-rcmx    Heat-resistant alloys such as nickel based alloys have high corrosion and heat resistance properties and are widely used in aerospace applications, at thermal power plants, nuclear power plants and petrochemical plants. However, the materials have the disadvantages of very poor machinability that causes short tool life. To deal with the inherent problems of machining difficult-to-cut materials, Mitsubishi Materials have developed a range of chip breakers for difficult to cut materials called FJ, MJ and GJ breakers. These chip breakers combined with MIRACLE coated VP05RT, VP10RT and VP15TF grades enjoy a high reputation in the market.

However, to meet strong needs for higher efficiency, Mitsubishi Materials has developed a new CVD coated grade for turning heat-resistant alloys, US905, that enables high-speed, high-efficiency machining, and have expanded the M-class, MJ chip breaker series to cover wider cutting conditions.

Features of a new grade US905 and the new M-class MJ chip breaker series are as follows.

1.
US905 uses the highest-hardness cemented carbide substrate suitable for CVD coating.
The coating consists of layers of fibrous crystalline titanium carbonitride and a fine-grained alumina layer. This enables the new grade to curb thermal plastic deformation of the cutting edge to prevent a decrease in dimensional machining accuracy and has successfully increased wear and welding resistance at high temperatures. Therefore, stable machining in the high-speed area that conventional grades failed to achieve now becomes possible.
2.
New M-class MJ chip breakers are available with large corner radii and additionally a high cost-performance WNMG type insert is also included in the range.
The breakers with large corner radii can decrease damage at the depth of cut line, a problem that tends to occur during the cutting of nickel based alloys and can also be used for machining at larger depths of cut.
