Mitsubishi Materials has designed and manufactured the MNS drill, one of the worlds first 4 through coolant hole drills. MNS is a series of non coated solid carbide drills for high feed, reliable drilling of aluminium alloys.

Expanding usage of aluminium products in today’s market has led to a demand from customers to help them be more cost effective when drilling deep holes. To achieve this, Mitsubishi Materials specifically developed the MNS drill.

The drill uses 4 coolant holes, 2 positioned on the outer cutting edge and 2 holes on the inner cutting edge. The positioning of the holes has been carefully studied using flow analysis to ensure that the chisel point and the cutting edge receive sufficient coolant to prevent weld build up during deep, single step drilling.

Curved cutting edge geometry, similar to that of it’s successful counterpart the MWS drill is used and in combination with this curved cutting edge, optimised flute geometry for effective chip curling and disposal has been incorporated into the design. Together with suitable flank grinding to eliminate weld build up, greatly enhanced, high feed machining of aluminium alloys is made possible.

By using the innovative MNS drill, higher feeds and machining efficiencies can be achieved leading to an overall reduction in manufacturing costs and increased productivity.

Available from Ø3mm to Ø20mm. However the sizes from Ø3mm to Ø4.5mm have 2 coolant holes, above Ø4.5mm, 4 coolant holes are used.
